Kurt Cobain Rolling Stone cover - homophobes don't buy our records.
Kurt Cobain was vocally progressive about masculinity and sexuality. It'd make a huge difference for the adolescent experience, and the way we emotionally mature, if there were more male voices in American popular like his:
Cobain:  "I knew I was different. I thought that I might be gay or something because I couldn't identify with any of the guys at all. None of them liked art or music, they just wanted to fight and get laid. It was many years ago but it gave me this real hatred for the average American macho male."
...
Cobain:  "See Iíve always wanted male friends that I could be real intimate with and talk about important things with and be as affectionate with that person as I would be with a girl. "
It's safe to say that there were thousands of boys listening to Nirvana in the early 90s that didn't know this part of the story. For the mainstream male audience in American pop culture, these are the part of the story that we leave out.
Kurt Cobain - probably could be bisexual, but I'm married...
The Advocate (1992):  Because people thought you were gay and you had gay friends, did you ever wonder if you might be gay?
Cobain:  Yeah, absolutely. See Iíve always wanted male friends that I could be real intimate with and talk about important things with and be as affectionate with that person as I would be with a girl. Throughout my life, Iíve always been really close with girls and made friends with girls. And Iíve always been a really sickly, feminine person anyhow, so I thought I was gay for a while because I didnít find any of the girls in my high school attractive at all. They had really awful haircuts and fucked-up attitudes. So I thought I would try to be gay for a while, but Iím just more sexually attracted to women. But Iím really glad that I found a few gay friends, because it toally saved me from becoming a monk or something.
I mean, Iím definitely gay in spirit, and I probably could be bisexual. But Iím married, and Iím more attracted to Courtney than I ever have been toward a person, so thereís no point in trying to sow my oats at this point. [Laughs] If I wouldnít have found Courtney, I probably would have carried on with a bisexual lifestyle. But I just find her totally attractive in all ways.
